An introduction to the sewing machine and upcycling - Presented by David Mumford
No previous sewing experience required.
Scraps of fabric are ready cut into square and oblong pieces ready to assemble into a long strip. During the process of stitching these pieces together you will learn techniques for creating seams, with varying methods of finishing off raw edges, whilst exploring different types of decorative stitching.
Once this strip has been created you will stitch down the length centrally creating a box pleat. All the different methods taught are relevant to the future construction of a full garment. You will then be guided through simple techniques for making other upcycled accessories.
The result will be an attractive, upcycled accessory that you can wear which also acts as a visual aid to help you go forward with your sewing skills.
An introduction to the marvels of upcycling - Presented by David Mumford
Skills required: basic sewing, familiarity with a sewing machine
You will need to bring a large man’s work shirt with you for deconstruction (an old one of yours or one from a charity shop will do)
Project: How to Reinterpret a Man’s Classic Shirt
The one day course will be for people who have a basic knowledge of sewing, and can use a domestic sewing machine.
A selection of finished upcycle samples will be provided for inspiration. The pieces will vary in terms of complication so that there will be something that everybody can complete within the course time scale.
There will be no patterns to follow and participants will learn simple methods of deconstruction in addition to basic cutting and machining. Other techniques used will involve origami-type folding, draping and the re-construction of the shirt’s components.
The outcome will be a finished item for each individual to take away. Having learned new techniques and seen clothing from a different viewpoint they will gain inspiration to go forward with their own ideas.
